"We have gotten reports that circulators are telling people that the city will be selling the plants," Pawlowski said in a statement. "We have spent nearly four months educating people about a proposed lease/concession. We can't allow a distortion of the facts. We are seeking to make sure that individuals are getting the correct information."I have no doubt that the petition circulators were following the letter of the law. They are well aware of the administration's scrutiny and actions against their effort. In regard to distortion, Pawlowski should tell the voters that the lease will not expire until their grandchildren need a nursing home.

Allentown Becomes A Monarchy
Park and Shop Lots |
Flash ahead thirty five years to another downward market, and we have one gentleman, J.B. Reilly, buying up center-city with municipal bonds backed by state taxes. Reilly has purchased far more property than ever owned by Park and Shop. He has purchased virtually the four square blocks surrounding the arena, a significant portion of the Neighborhood Improvement Zone(NIZ). Again the process was facilitated by our elected officials. Let us hope that the new monarchy will be as benevolent as the old oligarchy.
Music video: 'Ooo I wanna get you out of Teterboro...'
A pilot in my family turned me on to this terrific music video -- written, performed and produced by his friend, Mike Wagner. The catchy lyrics are set to an old Beach Boys song, and the video is very entertaining.
Out in New Jersey(s)You can find the rest of the Teterboro lyrics on Mike's blog, and you can find a link to download an audio-only version there, too.
There’s a place called Teterboro
That’s where everybody goes
To be a part of it all
Lots of jets on the ramp
Loaded up waiting to start engines
They’ll be there for an hour
Before they even have the chance
Down in Teterboro

Kudos to Mike Wagner for doing such a great job with the video, and thanks to Pat Sullivan for sending it to me.
Flight crew's unprofessional behavior caused PSA Airlines CRJ-200 runway overrun at Charleston, WV
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued its final report on the PSA Airlines CRJ-200 runway overrun at Charleston, WV, in January of this year. The aircraft (registration N246PS) overran a runway at Yeager Airport (CRW), Charleston, WV, following a rejected takeoff. The NTSB report attributes the incident to the flight crew's "unprofessional behavior."
The incident flight, operating as US Airways Express Flight 2495, was departing Charleston for Charlotte Douglas International Airport, NC. After noticing that the flaps were incorrectly configured for takeoff, the crew rejected takeoff at high speed -- well above V1. The aircraft overran the end of the runway and came to a stop in the engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) in the runway end safety area.
There were no injuries among the three crew members and 31 passengers on board. The aircraft's flaps, landing gear, and landing gear doors "received minor damage," according to the NTSB.
The NTSB's statement of probable cause is as follows:
(1) The flight crewmembers’ unprofessional behavior, including their nonadherence to sterile cockpit procedures by engaging in nonpertinent conversation, which distracted them from their primary flight-related duties and led to their failure to correctly set and verify the flaps; Here are the links to the NTSB's final report:
(2) the captain’s decision to reconfigure the flaps during the takeoff roll instead of rejecting the takeoff when he first identified the misconfiguration, which resulted in the rejected takeoff beginning when the airplane was about 13 knots above the takeoff decision speed and the subsequent runway overrun; and
(3) the flight crewmembers’ lack of checklist discipline, which contributed to their failure to detect the incorrect flap setting before initiating the takeoff roll.
Contributing to the survivability of this incident was the presence of an engineered materials arresting system beyond the runway end.

Explosion rocks Moscow's Domodedovo Airport
A large explosion rocked the international arrivals hall at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport (DME) earlier today, January 24, 2011. Local officials say that the blast, which was caused by a suicide bomber, killed at least 35 people and left more than 100 injured.
Amateur video and photos shot on site showed a grisly scene, with bodies and body parts strewn about, and heavy smoke hanging in the air. ProducerMatthew.com has posted links to several photos from inside the Domodedovo Terminal.
Air traffic at DME was disrupted immediately after the bombing. Some flights were diverted to Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, or to St. Petersburg. Other en route flights returned to their departure cities.

Heart Rate Watch Company Adds Goal Zero Portable Power For Electronics
Bozeman, MT (PRWEB) October 26, 2012
The Heart Rate Watch Company is proud to announce that they will be carrying Goal Zero portable power devices and solar chargers."Goal Zero works really well at recharging GPS watches, Smart phones and other electronics in a portable, or off the grid, environment", says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "Our chief tester John Yarington brought the products to our attention after a 260 mile trek from Yosemite to Mount Whitney this summer".
Goal Zero makes rechargeable battery packs like the Goal Zero Guide 10 Battery Pack that can recharge a GPS watch or a Smart phone 2 to 3 times without access to power.
The company also makes a Goal Zero Guide 10 Mobile Kit that includes the battery pack, rechargeable batteries and a light weight solar panel that can be hung on a back pack to charge on the go. The solar panel can even recharge the battery pack in about 2 hours. "This is far better technology than existed even 2 years ago", says Squire.
Now one can go off the grid and have their Smartphone for safety, load books to it, have music, have portable lights and even recharge their GPS watch while adding just over a pound to their total load. "The whole set up is extremely minimalist but adds a lot of comfort and safety to any trip", says Squire.
In conjunction with several new navigating GPS watches like the Garmin fenix and Suunto Ambit these Goal Zero portable power supplies are ideal for everything from mountain biking in Moab to back country ski expeditions or mountaineering.
You can buy Goal Zero portable power supplies at the Heart Rate Watch Company.

Pawlowski's Freakout
"We have gotten reports that circulators are telling people that the city will be selling the plants," Pawlowski said in a statement. "We have spent nearly four months educating people about a proposed lease/concession. We can't allow a distortion of the facts. We are seeking to make sure that individuals are getting the correct information."I have no doubt that the petition circulators were following the letter of the law. They are well aware of the administration's scrutiny and actions against their effort. In regard to distortion, Pawlowski should tell the voters that the lease will not expire until their grandchildren need a nursing home.

Downhill on Lehigh Street
During the early 1970's, Allentown demolished the entire neighborhood between Union and Lawrence Streets. It was, in a large part, home to the black community. How ironic that we destroyed the cohesion of a neighborhood, but renamed Lawrence Street after Martin Luther King. The only remnant of the neighborhood is the St. James A.M.E. Church. Going up the hill today we now have a vacant bank call center on the east, and the Housing Authority Project on the west. A whole neighborhood existed in from both sides of Lehigh Street, including black owned shops. The houses were old and humble, but people owned them, many for generations. Some blacks at the time wondered if the project was Urban Renewal or Negro Removal?

Open Thanksgiving Letter to Charlie Dent
Today I learned from Scott Kraus's informative article in The Morning Call, that you have joined the Cranberry Caucus. Although I thank you for your attentive attitude toward local business, I would like to add a few points of information not discussed in the article. Most of Ocean Spray's employees will follow the company from New Jersey, not providing many new local jobs. New Jersey didn't fight the relocation with much vigor, because the discharge from the juice process is particularly potent, providing an unwanted challenge to their waste water systems. On the other hand, bottling companies have been coming to the Lehigh Valley, because of Allentown's abundant supply of water, and capacity to treat sewage, as distributed through the Lehigh County Authority. As you know, Mayor Pawlowski is eager to lease these systems for fifty years, despite widespread public opposition. In this regard, Ocean Spray is but one more customer for a private water company. Will such a company safeguard both the supply of water, and it's waste treatment, with as much scrutiny and concern as the current public oversight? In the past few years the bottling industry has become a concern to those advocates concerned with the quantity of our drinking water. The Mayor's plan is beyond an Allentown issue; It affects the entire region, which should be involved in the deliberation.
My best wishes for your holiday,
Michael Molovinsky

Burt Luckenbach, Park Activist
`Green' Curtain Blocks Sledding And The View
January 09, 1992|The Morning Call
To the Editor:
Hold your sleds girls and boys! Others, too, on the alert! With the planting of a dense cluster of 60 evergreen trees and the erection of a "No Sledding" sign, creating a veritable iron curtain, the park and watershed people have once again undertaken their repetitive effort of the past 45 years to eliminate a most popular sledding slope in Lehigh Parkway. The motive -- crass self-interest in defiance of public good. The effect -- an impassable barrier and concealment of a magnificent vista of "one of the finest valleys in Eastern Pennsylvania."
Children and adults from the 400 homes with longtime and easy access to the slope and others arriving in cars have enjoyed sledding here after school and into the night and throughout the day and night on weekends. Yet sledding is but one of the attractions of this enduring slope. In summer children and teachers from Lehigh Parkway Elementary School have enjoyed a walk down the slope and into the park for a break from book and blackboard. Birders, joggers, hikers and others on a leisurely stroll engrossed in their particular interest have found the slope irresistible.
For a host of others, this opening into the park after a long stretch of woods presents a charming vista and urge to descend. Interest is immediately evoked by the sight of a mid-19th century log house (now tenanted by a city employee whose privacy is further enhanced by the closure of the slope) and a historic wagon trail leading past the site of a lime kiln to tillable lands of earlier times.
The view takes in an expanse of meadowlands, now groomed, to the Little Lehigh River and up the western slope to Lehigh Parkway North. Indeed, a pleasant view to be esteemed and preserved for generations to come. It was distressing on New Year's Day to see a family and their guests intent upon a walk down the slope suddenly stop in amazement and shock as the closure became evident.
The cost in dollars through the years of the park peoples' fixation on destroying the Parkway slope must be staggering indeed without dwelling on other deliberate depletions. Typically, the placement of the 1991 "No Sledding" sign employed a team of four men with three vehicles -- a backhoe, a panel truck, and a super cab pickup truck, the latter furnishing radio music.
BERT A. LUCKENBACH
ALLENTOWN
Burt Luckenbach was a park activist, who wrote this letter in 1992. Few remember sledding on that hill above the Log & Stone house, but I do. The open hill was located at the end of Lehigh Parkway South, near the intersection with Coronado Street. The Wagon Trail has been blocked off for years by several large fallen trees. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Luckenbach, but like to think that he would approve of my efforts regarding the parks.

Maxim's 22: A French Bistro in Easton brought you by the owners of Sette Luna
Naturally I was excited to hear that the team was bringing a new restaurant concept to downtown Easton: a true French bistro, called Maxim's 22 Bistro and Brasserie. It is opening in a space on the ground floor of the former Pomeroy's building (322 Northampton St., Easton).
According to Maxim's 22 Owner Josh:
We are planning an October 2nd open date. The theme and concept is a traditional French Bistro & Brasserie. This is overall casual fare at an affordable price point. The menu features everything from oysters to burgers to steak frites to half roast chicken to pates and steaks. It will offer Easton's, if not the Valley's largest specialty draft beer selection and an affordable, extensive wine selection. And certainly kid friendly!
Yum. Since it's not open yet... what next?
- Save the date for the Lehigh Valley Style Insider Happy Hour October 9, 5:30 p.m.
- "Like" Maxim's 22 on Facebook
- Call (610) 252-2622 to make a reservation
- Apply for a job at the restaurant
- Bookmark the restaurant's website (still currently under construction)
Sincere best wishes to Josh and his team on this new and exciting venture - if anyone knows how to make a restaurant a success in downtown Easton, it's them. (And also hooray for their new baby, expected to arrive just days after the restaurant opens!)
Revealing My Sources, Part I
In this blog post, I will reveal one of the many sources I go to for information about what's happening, new businesses, and ideas for blog postings. Lehigh Valley Marketplace, an ad-magazine that is mailed for free to certain addresses (if you don't get it, you can call and ask, or read the content online for free). It is not available for purchase and is not distributed to retail locations to pick up for free, like other pubs. It's a beautifully-designed piece that includes some editorial content. For instance, the Fall 2012 issue includes a review of The Mint Gastropub and gives readers an overview of Fountain Hill history, retail and restaurants. But some of the good stuff lies in the margins - in the ads. I'd encourage you to check out this publication for inspiration - and look beyond the ads, into the business' web sites, to learn more.

Finally, the last page always includes a "corkboard" of upcoming events, some big like the Downtown Bethlehem Harvest Festival, some small like a cardiac health summit at Lehigh Valley Hospital and a Zumba fundraiser.
Stay tuned for more sources - in the meantime, enjoy the beautiful fall weather in the Lehigh Valley!

Guest Post: Mortgage Advice for Lehigh Valley Transplants
By Eve Robinson:
For a nearly a quarter of a century, the Lehigh Valley has been the location in which large numbers of families from New York and New Jersey have decided to up-sticks and relocate. Despite a potentially longer commute to work, many families who move from NY and NJ are attracted to Lehigh Valley due to the attractive quality of life and lower cost of living.
Often given the nickname ‘transplants’ by the locals, relocating to a new area is usually an exciting time but it goes without saying that there is plenty to think about. Because of this things don’t always run smoothly for the Valleys newest residents, especially when you take into consideration the stresses and strains associated with moving house and relocating to a new area.
Relocating is far from plain sailingThe truth is finding your dream home is relatively straightforward when compared to the decisions you’ll have to make when it comes to choosing the right home loan for your new property. To make things even more complicated, people looking to purchase a new property will find that there are literally thousands of home loan deals available, with each one seeming to be ever so slightly different to the last.
It’s fair to say that the property market isn’t what it was once was. In recent years, there have been more than enough stories in the media regarding mortgages - how expensive they are, the various types that may or may not be available, the change in criteria that means many people don’t qualify for a mortgage. With so much to take in successfully navigating your way through what could potentially be a mortgage minefield is vital.
So where do you even begin to start in deciding which one will be most suitable?
Seek the right advice to understand the mortgage marketA good place to start when it comes to looking for a suitable mortgage is to contact your local mortgage broker and have them take care of everything for you. Or at least it was! In all honesty, it’s not the best time to be a mortgage broker. The once good name of many a mortgage broker/advisor (call them what you will) has been dragged through the mud and back again, with large groups of industry experts laying the blame of property market collapse solely at the brokers door. This is taken one step further by the some leading banks saying that they will stop using mortgage brokers altogether. All this is happening when more borrowers are seeking guidance on mortgages than ever before.
If financial institutions won’t work with mortgage brokers, then why should borrowers? It’s a good point and one simple answer is that not all mortgage brokers are unscrupulous sharks who only have their own interests at heart. Far from it, there are still plenty out there who will offer you the best advice, rates and financial planning possible.
That said it will certainly make sense for you to research when it comes to choosing someone who is going to give you advice on your mortgage.
Here are some good rules of thumb as you take those all important steps into home financing:
Compare mortgage brokersYou shouldn’t limit yourself to choosing one mortgage broker, why put all your eggs in one basket? Cast your net far and wide. As ever, if you can find a personal recommendation from a satisfied customer then that will almost certainly be invaluable. If a recommendation isn’t forthcoming then you might want to search online for a reputable advisor or look what is available to you locally. A good place to start is by finding an advisor in your area who is registered with either the MBAA or NAMB; this means that they are authorized to give you advice. A good place to start for brokers in Lehigh Valley is the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce or the Lehigh Valley Association of Realtors (LVAR).
Be prepared! When you eventually come to meeting with your broker, it’s really important that you are as prepared as possible, in order to get the most out of your meeting. Go in with a list of questions; make a note of your current circumstances and what it is that you need from your mortgage. Make sure you know (exactly) your current salary and how much you are looking to borrow. During the meeting, if you are at all unclear with any of the information the broker has told you then ask him or her to explain exactly what it is they are advocating.
ResearchFinally, even if you are quite satisfied with your broker, it won’t do you any harm to do some of your own research online. The internet is awash with mortgage comparison sites. These sites will help you to find the best rates and will give you a good base in which you can compare anything offered to you by your broker.
