A large explosion rocked the international  arrivals hall at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport (DME) earlier today, January 24, 2011.  Local officials say that the blast, which was caused by a suicide bomber, killed at least 35 people and left more than 100 injured.

Amateur video and photos shot on site showed a grisly scene, with bodies and body parts strewn about, and heavy smoke hanging in the air.  ProducerMatthew.com has posted links to several photos from inside the Domodedovo Terminal.

Air traffic at DME was disrupted immediately after the bombing.  Some flights were diverted to Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, or to St. Petersburg.  Other en route flights returned to their departure cities.

Johann Sebastian Bach's music in America

To contact us Click HERE
Johann Sebastian Bach
The earliest evidence of Johann Sebastian Bach's music in America can be found in the Moravian Archives. In 1823, a Bethlehem musician made copies of one of Bach’s cantatas. It took another Moravian musician to make Bach’s music a part of the musical tradition of Bethlehem, PA. Dr. J. Fred Wolle was visiting Munich in the spring of 1885 and took the opportunity to hear a production of Bach’s St. John Passion. Wolle returned to Bethlehem, determined to bring Bach’s music to life in America. Under his supervision, the Bethlehem Choral Union sang the St. John Passion, on June 5, 1888. It was the first complete rendition of the work in this country. Wolle conducted the first complete performance of Bach’s Mass in B Minor, at the Central Moravian Church in 1900. Due to the historical importance of these accomplishments, the Central Moravian Church earned recognition as a National Landmark of Music.
The Bach Festival moved to the Packer Memorial Church of Lehigh University in 1912. A review in Outlook Magazine of the 1918 Bach Festival described the event. “Mr. Wolle leads without a baton, and his nervous arms and fingers seemed not only to be charged with electricity, but to electrify the whole body of people there, those in the choir seats and those in the pews alike. He made those people not only sing, but think the words as they sang them.”
Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 31, 1685, in Eisenach, Germany. He lived his entire life in Germany. He was born as the youngest and eighth child of Johan Ambrosius Bach and Elisabeth Lammerhirt. Johann Sebastian came from a long line of musicians and composers. He lost both his parents, within the same year, at the age of nine. Johann Sebastian and his brother Johann Jacob went to live with their eldest brother, Johann Christoph, who was organist in Ohrdruf.
At age eighteen, Bach was appointed organist of the Neue Kirche in Arnstadt. His first known compositions were written during the early 1700s. At that time he was courting his second cousin and future wife, Maria Barbara Bach. A new job as organist of the Blasiuskirche in Mühlhausen and a small inheritance allowed them to marry in 1707. In Mühlhausen, Bach began to write cantatas. The cantatas that survived from this period are regarded as masterpieces. The Blasiuskirche suffered a great fire and Bach sought employment 40 miles north in the city of Weimar as organist in the court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst.
While in Weimar, he continued to write cantatas along with compositions for the organ, harpsichord, choral preludes and fugues. Duke Wilhelm Ernst was in a contentious power struggle with another Duke in Weimar, Ernst August. Ignoring politics, Bach wrote compositions for both Dukes, which angered his employer. Duke Wilhelm Ernst had Bach jailed for a month.
Upon leaving jail in 1717, Bach moved his family to Köthen and began his new job as Kapellmeister (director of music) to Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen. During his stay in Köthen, Bach wrote the six Brandenburg Concertos, violin concertos in A Minor, E Major, and the double concert in D Minor, Invention, the French Suites and the English Suites. Bach’s wife, Maria Barbara, died in 1720 after a short illness. Bach married Anna Magdalena Wilcken, a talented soprano, in 1721.
In 1723, Bach became Kapellmeister in the St Thomas School in Leipzig. Beginning in March 1729, Bach assumed the direction of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig. Bach was always looking for ways to increase his income.  He sold books, music and Silbermann fortepianos. Bach finished his great B Minor Mass in 1749. Bach was practically blind due to cataracts at the end of his life. In 1750, he suffered a stroke. He died on July 28, 1750, probably from diabetes mellitus. During his lifetime, Bach was famous for his organ and harpsichord playing. The high regard for his compositions didn’t occur the 19th century.
During the first two weekends of May, thousands of Bach lovers from across the country arrive in Bethlehem, PA to hear the Bach Choir and Bach Festival Orchestra.

Flight crew's unprofessional behavior caused PSA Airlines CRJ-200 runway overrun at Charleston, WV

by B. N. Sullivan

accident sceneThe U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued its final report on the PSA Airlines CRJ-200 runway overrun at Charleston, WV, in January of this year.  The aircraft (registration N246PS) overran a runway at Yeager Airport (CRW), Charleston, WV, following a rejected takeoff.  The NTSB report attributes the incident to the flight crew's "unprofessional behavior."

The incident flight, operating as US Airways Express Flight 2495, was departing Charleston for Charlotte Douglas International Airport, NC.  After noticing that the flaps were incorrectly configured for takeoff, the crew rejected takeoff at high speed -- well above V1.  The aircraft overran the end of the runway and came to a stop in the engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) in the runway end safety area.

There were no injuries among the three crew members and 31 passengers on board.  The aircraft's flaps, landing gear, and landing gear doors "received minor damage," according to the NTSB.

The NTSB's statement of probable cause is as follows:
(1) The flight crewmembers’ unprofessional behavior, including their nonadherence to sterile cockpit procedures by engaging in nonpertinent conversation, which distracted them from their primary flight-related duties and led to their failure to correctly set and verify the flaps;

(2) the captain’s decision to reconfigure the flaps during the takeoff roll instead of rejecting the takeoff when he first identified the misconfiguration, which resulted in the rejected takeoff beginning when the airplane was about 13 knots above the takeoff decision speed and the subsequent runway overrun; and

(3) the flight crewmembers’ lack of checklist discipline, which contributed to their failure to detect the incorrect flap setting before initiating the takeoff roll.

Contributing to the survivability of this incident was the presence of an engineered materials arresting system beyond the runway end.
Here are the links to the NTSB's final report:

State Supremes Dismiss Otter Claim For Att'y Fees in Gracedale Saga

To contact us Click HERE
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has refused to hear Doylestown lawyer Larry Otter's continuing attempt to grab attorney fees from Ron Angle and yours truly in the never-ending Gracedale saga. This follows a Commonwealth Court opinion that quashed his appeal.

This claim for attorney fees arises from the ashes of a lawsuit that Angle and I filed, challenging the Gracedale referendum. We claimed there were not enough valid signatures. We came close, but in the end, we lost.

Otter, who claims he's an election law expert worth $450 an hour, claimed that Angle and I acted in bad faith. He claimed our lawsuit was funded by taxpayer dollars paid to a law firm hired by the County to expedite Gracedale's sale.

Then he proceeded to try his case in the press. Here's just some of the publicity, some of which were lead stories:

3/14/11: Morning Call - "Did taxpayers fund Gracedale petition fight?"

3/16/11: WFMZ - "Attorney: Taxpayer Dollars Used To Challenge Gracedale Petition" (In this one, Otter was demanding a criminal investigation and had us all in jail).

4/20/11: Morning Call - "Did taxpayers help fund a private Gracedale lawsuit?"

4/28/11: Express Times - "Attorney claims Bernie O'Hare, Ron Angle illegally used taxpayer money for Gracedale ballot fight"

But cases are tried in courtrooms, not newspapers. When Otter had to argue in front of a judge, instead of Channel 69 reporter Bo Koldcrow, he lost repeatedly.

Judge Baratta concluded that, even if the County acted improperly, that has nothing to do with Angle or me. "[W]e found that such evidence is irrelevant to the issue before the Court related to proving vexatious, obdurate, dilatory or bad faith actions or motive on the part of the pro se litigants. We have already ruled that Mr. O'Hare and Mr. Angle raised legitimate and justiciable issues and further presented competent and compelling evidence challenging the legality of thousand signatures. In fact, Mr. O'Hare and Mr. Angle successfully established that thousands of signatures were invalid ... ."

Otter, who incidentally has no malpractice insurance, claimed that I had perjured myself. He never bothered to state how. He also accused Angle, County Executive John Stoffa and I of being dishonest with the Court. Once again, he was a little short on details.

In addition to calling me a thief, Otter also happens to be the attorney who filed a malicious prosecution accusing me of sexual assault, stalking, burglary (twice) and even attempted pig poisoning (twice).

That was played up in the press, too.

That case was dismissed the day after it was filed.

Now it's my turn.

VOR: Why Allentown Must Keep Its Water System

To contact us Click HERE
Because democracy is dead in Allentown, the privatization of Allentown's water and sewer systems is a done deal. Its urban growth regime has already decided the matter, and everything else is window dressing. Those who are opposed are naysayers or whatever.

One of these naysayers is a regular contributor to this blog. He goes by the moniker VOR, i.e. Voice of Reason. He posted a comment yesterday, and I have to share it with one and all, especially since many readers stay away from the comments.

As a basic human need, water service should be a responsibility of governments. Transfer of control to a private entity that seeks to maximize profits reduces public accountability and can adversely affect the quality and equity of service.

* Water privatization can negatively impact low-income and underserved communities by unfair rate increases and poor service to these communities.

* Water privatization may lead to lower quality service and higher rates. In cases where communities have tried to reclaim their water systems from private entities, poor water quality, unresponsiveness to customer complaints, and rate hikes have been the most frequent complaints.

* Private multinational companies don't have a stake in the community in which they operate. This can have negative effects on small communities when it results in firing city employees and hiring new staff or significantly cutting benefits to long-time employees.

* Many privatization agreements fail to include adequate public participation. In addition, many of these contracts do not include enough provisions for contract monitoring and accountability.

* Many privatization efforts ignore the impact on local ecosystems and downstream water users, and may have long-term negative effects on the environment.

* Private companies, which stand to make more money for the sale of more water, may neglect the potential for water use efficiency and conservation improvements.

The Romney I Never Knew

To contact us Click HERE
Let me tell you a bit about my flawed thinking. Before I can vote or support a candidate, I have to like him. His positions matter, too, but I first have to feel some kind of connection. And in the case of Mitt Romney, it hasn't been there. Aloof though he may be, I feel closer to Obama than some ascotted rich dude who just stepped off his corporate jet.

But do I have Romney wrong? According to BuzzFeed Politics, he's a much more likable person during "off the record" discussions.
With the cameras off and the journalists' notepads a safe distance from their pens, Romney candidly answered questions about his speech preparation, the impact his father's career had on him, and his Massachusetts gubernatorial record. He seemed, reporters said later, like a different person: funnier, more intellectually honest, comfortably dorky, and even prone to introspection.
Amazingly, this is the Romney being shielded from public view.

Maybe his handlers should rethink that position.

Politico: Simmons Playing Defense

According to Politico, State Rep. Justin Simmons is playing defense against challenger Kevin Deely. He's running two television ads, one of them negative, to counter the public sector union money flowing into Deely's coffers.

This entry, which includes allegations that Deely was tossed out of a 2009 conference over marijuana use, provoked this humorous comment:
This guy will fit right in with the other legislators in the Lehigh Valley! Picture this car pool home from Harrisburg.

The Stoner can drive. Mensch can ride shot gun and Boscola, Brown and Brennan can all sleep it off in the back seat. May take them a while to get home if Deely gets the munchies.

Rapidly-Growing Digital Marketing Agency Has Added To Impressive Roster Since 2012 Survey Announced; RKG Now Tops Industry With Over 40 of Top 500 Retailers Onboard

Charlottesville, VA (PRWEB) September 10, 2012

RKG | Rimm-Kaufman Group has been named to the top Search Engine Marketing vendors list in Internet Retailer’s 2012 survey of top retailers, the company announced today.

The highly-coveted industry ranking is based on interviews with more than 1,000 of today’s top retailers, conducted by the magazine’s research team. According to officials at the rapidly-growing Charlottesville, Virginia-based company, RKG has continued to add to its impressive client roster even since the survey was completed, and now counts an industry-leading roster of over 40 of the Top 500 retailers among its clients.

This latest positive news for RKG makes it the number one Search Engine Marketing vendor to serve top retail clients using proprietary bid management technology. This is a distinction that captures the essence of what the company is all about, according to its Co-Founder and CEO George Michie.

“RKG’s success can be traced directly to our client-centric approach and our deep retail experience,” Michie said. “One key way to that approach is that we serve our clients with proprietary, customizable technology. It is simply impossible to deliver flexible, customized solutions with rigid, third-party software.”

The source of the recognition, according to RKG VP of Marketing Ryan Gibson, makes it even more gratifying. “As an agency with its roots in retail and in search, it means even more to us to be recognized by a group made up of today’s leading retailers. Their recognition is further proof that our unique combination of smart marketers and leading technologies provides exactly what retailers want and need in a dynamic and challenging marketplace. We congratulate our partners on the IR 500 and look forward to sharing RKG’s capabilities with even more members of this elite group in the future.”

Current RKG clients on the 2012 IR500 list include Charming Shoppes, Eddie Bauer, Nutrisystem, ThinkGeek and Zale Corp, along with over 35 others.

"I've been a huge fan of the America's Cup since the 1980s and I've been hoping for this day for a long time, to have the races come home to San Francisco, right here in our own beautiful backyard," said Jay Gardner, president of Adventure Cat Sailing Charters and sailing enthusiast. Gardner, along with his wife, business partner and crew, built the company's first catamaran by hand in 1991, a 48-passenger, coast guard certified vessel which is still in operation today. "The natural terrain of the bay creates the perfect amphitheater-like stage for water-viewing, not to mention the sheer beauty of the area. All of these elements, coupled with the region's strong winds and ocean currents should make for a thrilling series of events, possibly even the best Cup yet. If it's really nuking out on the Bay, it could end up being a game of pure survival - the winner simply being the last boat standing."

Allentown's Misplaced Priorities

To contact us Click HERE
The photograph above harks back to 1952, when Allentown had it's priorities straight. In 1954, the new East Side Fire Station was completed. Now demolished, the East Side waits for it's replacement, along with other things. Dennis Pearson explains it well.
One year ago the East Side Fire Station closed and we are still counting the days before it is rebuilt but not holding our breath for if we hold our breath too long we would need an undertaker rather then a Paramedic or fireman. How long will it take for us to feel safe... And you know what none of our elected city councilman and woman and appointed councilman and women have ranted and raved over this issue.... Two signs have been placed on fence guarding the empty lot of the former fire station to tell the story. Happy 250th year Allentown but the East Side has an issue that needs to be resolved. And also, there have been road work signs on Hanover Avenue the past two weeks ,,, We ask is the work being performed by ghosts for we certainly see no work being performed. Dennis Pearson
In addition to the East Side being neglected and endangered, the South Side is isolated because of the 15th Street Bridge Project. That work is being done at a casual pace, inappropriate for the hardship it is creating. Schreibers stone arch bridge has been severely damaged once again, from endless two way traffic with no monitoring. While the Transformational Hockey Arena receives most of the Mayor's attention, other problems are given band-aids. Opposition to selling one of our few remaining assets, the water system, rests with a few individuals and a couple of blogs. The share-owners in this city, the taxpaying property owners, need to assert themselves through their neighborhood crime groups. The perpetrator now is City Hall.

The Horrors Of Blogging

It seems that blogging may not be for the thin skinned. Few blogs that have started in the Valley remain for the long haul, especially as a regular venue, whether daily or even weekly. Most of the feedback or comments received by bloggers are anonymous. Although people do not want to reveal who they are, they are not bashful with either their questions for the blogger, or slurs about other people. The slurs end up being associated with the blogger. We even have bloggers that are anonymous. Today, the blogger known as LVIC defended his anonymity. He produced a video which claims that the Disciples Matthew and Luke also never revealed their last names, yet, they're read and appreciated. All LVIC wants for Christmas is a comment or two. Me, I keep thinking of Clark Gable; Frankly dear, I don't give a damn.

The Obama Campaign, realizing that the public is no longer mesmerized just by his empty oratory performances, today insulted the voter's intelligence. In a new commercial featuring Big Bird, Romney is depicted as supporting notorious Wall Street embezzlers, while being against the beloved Sesame Street Character. I believe as the polls narrow, the Obama Campaign will sink to historical lows in negative advertising.

I-78 Makes Reader's Digest List of America's 7 Worst Roads

To contact us Click HERE
From Reader's Digest: The Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-78 and I-80 in Pennsylvania - “Vehicles have gotten wider and bigger since these roads were built, and they’re still very narrow. They’ve also got a lot of hills and curves, and people are always crossing over into the other lane when they go around a curve. Plus, their on-ramps are very short, and there’s not enough time for people to get up to highway speed. So you end up with lots of people running into the back of slow-moving vehicles as they’re getting off a ramp … It seems like they’ve been under construction forever. We like to say they have two seasons in Pennsylvania: winter and construction.” - Trucker Frank Silio, Miami

Armstrong: Allentown's Frankenstein Monster

To contact us Click HERE
Scott Armstrong
When I posted a Scott Armstrong essay is September, there were numerous complaints like this - "And here is the challenge to Bernie: Stop publish nonsense like this from Scott Armstrong if he cannot produce a commentary with some substance. Just refuse to publish it." So I will respond to this challenge by publishing another Scott Armstrong essay. His last epistle, by the way, generated 83 comments, good and bad.

This one's about Allentown, and I pretty much agree with him.

For years now Allentown’s Democratic voters have chosen party allegiance over common sense at the ballot box. In 2005 they promoted to mayor a key player in a failed administration and since, have repeatedly elected and re-elected proven incompetents to city council. Meanwhile, they voted out of office every Republican-- including by all accounts, Allentown’s best city council person in memory, Tom Burke--and failed to support well qualified and capable Allentownians for city positions just because of party affiliation. Their straight party voting has produced a city controlled by a party machine under the thumb of a Democratic mayor and his Democratic cohorts on council. Every city bureau, agency, commission, and board is also populated by Democratic team players; all stand ready to receive and act on orders from the top. For good measure, the local press and media dominated as well by Democrats, routinely reports favorably on all this. This is how Allentown works, or more precisely, doesn’t work for the greater good. The latest example of this is the mayor’s plan to sell the city’s water works to pay off poorly thought out public sector pension obligations. This plan is so bad a few current and former Democratic elected officials are aghast. In a desperate attempt to stop the sale they are sounding the alarm and expecting a result. The monster they had a hand in creating is running amuck, bent on the fiscal destruction of the city, and despite their plea, the public pays no heed. After all, why should the citizenry be aroused? Aren’t the good guys in charge? Weren’t all the threats to the city removed when the Republican Tom Burke was thrown out of office?

The old adage of “you reap what you sow” is coming home to roost. Allentown’s Democratic voters and Democratic civic leaders have all had a hand in creating the monster that is the Pawlowski Administration. Presently, the wiser ones, aroused, are shocked by the destruction it/he is leveling on the city. How unfortunate it is for them to comprehend that their campaign to vilify those who could have stopped the monster was all too successful. Their call to action now falls on deaf ears.

A Sunday Drive ... On a Bike

To contact us Click HERE

Remember the Sunday drive? This one was on the bike. Using Google's mapping feature for bikes, I was able to get a route from Nazareth to Grange Park in Upper Macungie that kept me off the main drags. My grandson had a football game there against South Parkland. If he was going to risk his life against the Trojans, I'd risk mine against Lehigh Valley motorists.

Google Maps managed to put me on both the Nor-Bath and Ironton Trails for part of the 51-mile round trip.

The most dangerous part of my trip was the frequent appearance of PSU students, who were collecting money for cancer or something. There was even a kid waiting outside my estate.

I unleashed the hounds.

I shot some video of different parts of the trip, ending it with one of Dat's touchdown passes.

We both survived.

Hanover Zoners Approve Two Flex Buildings

To contact us Click HERE
Standing room only at Hanover Tp ZHB
Before a standing-room only crowd of over 70 residents, Hanover Township's Zoning Hearing Board has paved the way for two "flex" buildings on the north side of Jaindl Boulevard, Following a September 27 hearing, zoners unanimously decided to grant dimensional variances for this $25 million project. They did so despite complaints about truck traffic and noise from members of a Traditions of America (TOA) residential community for older, active adults, located directly across the street.

Located on a 49-acre tract owned by David Jaindl, the property is currently under agreement of sale with Griffin Land, a Connecticut-based land development company that has recently expanded into the Lehigh Valley. It has properties both in Upper Macungie and Bethlehem Townships. According to owner David Jaindl, Griffin is "the most neighbor sensitive developer I could find for the property."

In fact, that afternoon, Griffin President Michael Gamzon met with TOA residents, who asked him to reconfigure his plans so that truck access to the site is from Rte 512 or Township Line Road, instead of Jaindl Boulevard. Gamzon told zoners he's postponing a scheduled Planning Commission presentation, scheduled for October, to see if the plans can be revised. He also vowed to meet with residents again.

Last month, Gamzon told Supervisors that each building would produce approximately 200 jobs. That figure could go up or down, depending on the tenants attracted. At his juncture, no tenant has been identified.

"Flex" buildings, as Gamzon explained, are structures that can serve multiple commercial purposes, from warehouses to light industrial to even office space. These are permitted uses in Hanover's planned industrial business district, where they've been proposed. Gamzon testified that he hoped to attract up to four tenants for each of the buildings, but that Griffin would remain the owner and manager at the site.

"We got money and we got votes, and we're going to use both."
Though these are all permitted uses, a variance was necessary because Griffin was proposing to place all the doors and truck bays along just one side, the rear, of each building, away from TOA. Under Hanover's zoning ordinance, these can only be placed along 30% of each of the four sides of a building. This would allow for 76 doors and truck bays along a proposed 1050' x 260' building, and for 74 doors along the 1000' x 260' building. Griffin will use less door space - 65 (front building) and 61 (rear building) - than allowed under the zoning ordinance. But concentrating them on the rear side, away from the residents, would exceed the 30% maximum for door space along each side.

Project Engineer Kevin Horvath explained that it made sense to place all the bays and doors along one side. First, it takes advantage of the topography of the area, which drops 60' from the front to the rear of the property. Second, it discourages use as a trucking terminal, where double-sided loading (front and rear) are the norm. Third, and most importantly, it provides a buffer for TOA residents across the street.

Because of the downward slope of the property, Horvath told zoners that the visual impact of the site will be minimal. From the TOA development, Horvath stated that only the tops of these 38-40' buildings will be visible. Standing on Jaindl Boulevard, you'll see the top 10-15'.

David Jaindl calls project smart growth

Some TOA neighbors are opposed to any commercial development in their neighborhood. Anthony Scaramuzzino complained that after he moved here from NYC, "You put a residential neighborhood in the middle of what you could call Times Square. He later added, "We got money and we got votes and we're going to use both."

He also sounded off on the truck traffic that already exists along Jaindl Boulevard, comparing it to Route 78. "We can't leave a window open at night," he grumbled.

Matthew Ford moved in from New Jersey, which he called the Concrete State. "I don't want to see a warehouse or a trucking facility," he flatly stated.

Mary Jane Landrieu echoed those concerns, denouncing the increased truck traffic. "You're asking for a disaster to happen," she warned.

Other TOA residents seemed satisfied by the presentation.

Nick Tibberts asked, "Why do you even need a variance for this cosmetic change? It seems to me to be a waste of time." Joyce Camm added, "I love where I live. The main concern is the entrance way." Like Camm, Rosemary Douglas stated, "I love it here. It is the best decision of my life."

While zoners deliberated, David Jaindl explained why he planned for a residential community next to a planned industrial business district. "It's smart growth," he explained. "Live here, work here, shop here."

Now that Griffin Land has the variances, the next step in this process will be the Planning Commission. Gamzon predicted that plans will probably be ready in time for a meeting in November.

Griffin is represented by Attorney Greg Davis of Saul Ewing.

Planner Vincent Horvath must have been proud to see his son, Kevin, testify as an expert witness. But he had to recuse himself and was replaced by alternate Joseph Bednarik.

Johann Sebastian Bach's music in America

Founded in 2003, RKG is a data-driven digital marketing agency specializing in paid search marketing, search engine optimization, social media, comparison shopping engines and display advertising, brought together by multichannel attribution management.

Long recognized as the thought leader in online marketing, RKG has nearly 200 clients in the retail, travel, media, education, finance and online services. Learn more at http://www.rimmkaufman.com. You can also follow RKG on Twitter @rimmkaufman.
