Lawrence Disparti of the Disparti Law Group, P.A., says a national teen driver safety awareness campaign in May is a proper lead-in to the summer months.

Holiday, FL (PRWEB) May 12, 2012

Tampa car accident lawyer Lawrence Disparti said today that National Youth Traffic Safety Month in May is a good time for parents to teach teenage drivers about the importance of driving safely.

“After May, the school year ends, and teenagers enter three months that are, statistically speaking, the deadliest months of the year for young drivers,” said Disparti, founder of the Disparti Law Group, P.A., a Tampa personal injury firm and disability benefits law firm that provides legal assistance to car accident victims throughout Florida.

“Because it is Youth Traffic Safety Month, May is a good time to remind teenage drivers that a very important responsibility comes with a driver’s license and the keys to the car,” he said.

National Youth Traffic Safety Month is sponsored by the National Organizations for Youth Safety each May.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says more than 5,000 teens (ages 16-20) are killed in passenger vehicle crashes every year in the United States. Summer is the deadliest time of year on the roads for teenagers.

An average of 422 teenage drivers die in motor vehicle wrecks every month during the summer, a significant increase from the monthly average of 363 teen-driver deaths during the non-summer months, the NHTSA says.

“Parents need to discuss safe driving practices with their teenage children and, more importantly, model safe behavior by driving responsibly when their teens or younger children are in the car with them,” Disparti said.

A report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released in conjunction with National Youth Traffic Safety Month says teenage drivers are more likely to get into wrecks if they have passengers in their vehicles. The likelihood of a teen driver getting into an accident doubles with one passenger, AAA says, and it increases five-fold if there are two passengers.

Disparti said teenagers are also more likely to engage in risky driving behaviors, such as speeding, and using cell phones or drinking alcohol while driving.

The Disparti Law Group investigates motor vehicle accidents as part of personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits pursued on behalf of individuals injured in car crashes in Tampa, St. Petersburg and surrounding areas in South Florida.

“Teenagers often get into accidents simply because they are inexperienced drivers,” Disparti said. “However, we’ve seen, far too many serious motor vehicle accidents in South Florida caused by teenagers who were engaging in negligent, reckless and sometimes deadly behavior.”

Disparti said his firm strongly supports safe driving campaigns like National Youth Traffic Safety Month, and will continue to support people who are injured in car accidents caused by negligence and recklessness.

“When a driver’s improper actions cause a car wreck that maims or kills someone else, we will seek justice for those who have been injured,” he said.
