With Apple’s unveiling of the smaller and more portable iPad Mini—which competes directly with the Google Nexus 7 tablet—the mobile arena is now the official battleground of e-commerce, well beyond the cell phone dominion.
“Generation X and Y shoppers already depend on mobile devices for everything from email to calendars—so it should come natural for them to do their holiday shopping on their devices now that they trust them with everything else in their life,” said Andres Goyanes, a Director of PHG and Past-President of the American Marketing Association of Central Florida.
Online shopping on tablet PCs offers many inherent benefits for its users, including control over the safety and security of the transaction by shopping on a device of their own, without the challenge of using a public device to enter payment information.
Additionally, shopping online with a tablet PC is the emulation of the e-commerce environment already familiar to PC users, which can increase shoppers’ trust on the store and reduce the chance of confusion—particularly at the time of submitting an order and payment.
“Larger screen sizes on Android-based tablet PCs and iPads are contributing to a more pleasant online shopping experience,” said Marcelo Muller, a Principal at Planet Holdings Group.
Microsoft is not falling behind in the tablet revolution, anticipating that tablets will become as common as personal computers as they introduce the new Windows Surface tablet—a mobile device that is already backordered in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
