Maxim's 22: A French Bistro in Easton brought you by the owners of Sette Luna

To contact us Click HERE
I received an email a while back from one of the owners of Sette Luna, which is definitely among my favorite restaurants in the Lehigh Valley. The restaurant's inspired northern Italian menu, ambiance and service keep me coming back for brunch, business lunches, and delicious dinners. It's one of the places on my short list for special nights out, especially when friends and family are visiting from out of town.

Naturally I was excited to hear that the team was bringing a new restaurant concept to downtown Easton: a true French bistro, called Maxim's 22 Bistro and Brasserie. It is opening in a space on the ground floor of the former Pomeroy's building (322 Northampton St., Easton).

According to Maxim's 22 Owner Josh:
We are planning an October 2nd open date.  The theme and concept is a traditional French Bistro & Brasserie.  This is overall casual fare at an affordable price point.  The menu features everything from oysters to burgers to steak frites to half roast chicken to pates and steaks.  It will offer Easton's, if not the Valley's largest specialty draft beer selection and an affordable, extensive wine selection.  And certainly kid friendly!

Yum. Since it's not open yet... what next?

  • Save the date for the Lehigh Valley Style Insider Happy Hour October 9, 5:30 p.m.
  • "Like" Maxim's 22 on Facebook
  • Call (610) 252-2622 to make a reservation
  • Apply for a job at the restaurant
  • Bookmark the restaurant's website (still currently under construction)

Sincere best wishes to Josh and his team on this new and exciting venture - if anyone knows how to make a restaurant a success in downtown Easton, it's them. (And also hooray for their new baby, expected to arrive just days after the restaurant opens!)

There’s a place called Teterboro
That’s where everybody goes
To be a part of it all

Lots of jets on the ramp
Loaded up waiting to start engines
They’ll be there for an hour
Before they even have the chance

Flight crew's unprofessional behavior caused PSA Airlines CRJ-200 runway overrun at Charleston, WV

accident sceneThe U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued its final report on the PSA Airlines CRJ-200 runway overrun at Charleston, WV, in January of this year.  The aircraft (registration N246PS) overran a runway at Yeager Airport (CRW), Charleston, WV, following a rejected takeoff.  The NTSB report attributes the incident to the flight crew's "unprofessional behavior."

The incident flight, operating as US Airways Express Flight 2495, was departing Charleston for Charlotte Douglas International Airport, NC.  After noticing that the flaps were incorrectly configured for takeoff, the crew rejected takeoff at high speed -- well above V1.  The aircraft overran the end of the runway and came to a stop in the engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) in the runway end safety area.

There were no injuries among the three crew members and 31 passengers on board.  The aircraft's flaps, landing gear, and landing gear doors "received minor damage," according to the NTSB.

The NTSB's statement of probable cause is as follows:
(1) The flight crewmembers’ unprofessional behavior, including their nonadherence to sterile cockpit procedures by engaging in nonpertinent conversation, which distracted them from their primary flight-related duties and led to their failure to correctly set and verify the flaps;

(2) the captain’s decision to reconfigure the flaps during the takeoff roll instead of rejecting the takeoff when he first identified the misconfiguration, which resulted in the rejected takeoff beginning when the airplane was about 13 knots above the takeoff decision speed and the subsequent runway overrun; and

(3) the flight crewmembers’ lack of checklist discipline, which contributed to their failure to detect the incorrect flap setting before initiating the takeoff roll.

Contributing to the survivability of this incident was the presence of an engineered materials arresting system beyond the runway end.

A large explosion rocked the international  arrivals hall at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport (DME) earlier today, January 24, 2011.  Local officials say that the blast, which was caused by a suicide bomber, killed at least 35 people and left more than 100 injured.

Amateur video and photos shot on site showed a grisly scene, with bodies and body parts strewn about, and heavy smoke hanging in the air.  ProducerMatthew.com has posted links to several photos from inside the Domodedovo Terminal.

Air traffic at DME was disrupted immediately after the bombing.  Some flights were diverted to Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, or to St. Petersburg.  Other en route flights returned to their departure cities.

RSC Ends Blog Series With Very Personal Post

RSC Your College Prep Expert is concluding its blog series on the impact high tuition and student loan debt have on families with a look at the financial aid struggles of a surprise family: company founder Larry Schechter. His sister-in-law’s difficulties 20 years ago led Larry to begin helping families improve their financial aid. The final article runs on RSC’s Knowledge Bound Blog on Monday, September 3rd.

Schenectady, NY (PRWEB) August 30, 2012

On Monday, September 3, RSC Your College Prep Expert concludes its weekly blog series on the impact high college tuition and student loans are having on families with a post on the financial aid struggles that led to the company’s founding. The blog post, titled “How One Family’s Financial Aid Struggles Helped Thousands More Pay for College,” will post at 9 am Eastern Time on RSC’s Knowledge Bound blog.

In 1990, RSC founder Larry Schechter learned that his sister-in-law failed to fill out her financial aid forms on time and received no aid her sophomore year of college. This led Larry, already a successful small businessman, to examine the federal forms. He realized that people needed help. This was the beginning of the RSC program that has since helped tens of thousands of families prepare and pay for college.

“We’ve been pleased by the response to the blog series,” says John Braat, Executive Director of Student Enrollment. “Stories about families in difficult situations who got great financial give others hope that they can do it, too.”

The previous six blog posts are among the company’s most-read summer blogs. Each focuses on a different family, explaining how they managed to map out a path to college using the RSC program. Articles are filled with financial aid facts highlighting each family’s unique problems, from being a first-generation college student to overcoming poor high-school guidance and bad financial aid strategies.

“It was fascinating to go back and look at how our program helped these students get much better financial aid,” says John Briggs, Communications Director and author of each post. “You can just feel their joy at being able to afford college when many of them had all but given up.”

The series began July 23 and concludes after seven posts.

“Larry’s story, like the others, is inspirational,” says Maura Kastberg, Executive Director of Student Services, “and we knew we had to share it to let families know that we understand what they’re going through when it comes to paying for college.”

RSC Your College Prep and Financial Aid Expert is an innovator in on-demand college prep. Their program prepares students for college and career through extensive college research, SAT & ACT prep, comprehensive financial aid forms and paperwork services, and much more. William Arthur Calling Cards for Children, the Latest Trend in "Social Media"

William Arthur releases new calling cards for children. Find these new designs at an authorized retailer or online at williamarthur.com

WEST KENNEBUNK, MAINE (PRWEB) August 31, 2012

From the late 18th to early 20th centuries, members of fashionable society would leave their personal calling cards behind when a hostess was unavailable to receive them during visiting hours. Back then, calling on others was a finely observed social custom and vital communication tool. Distinct rituals were attached to calling cards, including the de rigueur practice of leaving them on display in front halls. Others who dropped in could see who was friends with the host—an earlier version of visiting someone’s Facebook page. With the advent of the telephone, the use of calling cards fell out of fashion, a quaint custom of a bygone era.

Now in the 21st century, calling cards are making a surprising comeback, with a revived interest in fine papers and vintage print methods fueling the trend. Elegant in their brevity, calling cards usually bear the presenter’s name and a contact number. Interestingly, many young adults now carry them; in a world of touch screens, an engraved bespoke card stands out.

And now digitally printed calling cards for children are emerging as the latest trend in social media. Busy networking moms find them to be stylish and useful. Typically the child’s name, her parents’ names and a contact number appear, along with a motif or monogram. “Calling cards help teach my children about thoughtful communication,” a Boston mother of two observes. “They’re useful, convenient, and a nice touch—people love receiving them! And my daughter feels really special having her own card to bring on play dates.”

Fine stationery manufacturer William Arthur has recently introduced a line of calling cards for children. Digitally printed in four optional sizes—in designs for girls, boys, and some gender neutral—the two-sided cards are proving popular among consumers. At accessible prices, with cheerful graphics, monograms and typestyles, calling cards are a charming way to help children navigate the early waters of social networking. 19th century gentility meets 21st-century technology and style.

Rapidly-Growing Digital Marketing Agency Has Added To Impressive Roster Since 2012 Survey Announced; RKG Now Tops Industry With Over 40 of Top 500 Retailers Onboard

Charlottesville, VA (PRWEB) September 10, 2012

RKG | Rimm-Kaufman Group has been named to the top Search Engine Marketing vendors list in Internet Retailer’s 2012 survey of top retailers, the company announced today.

The highly-coveted industry ranking is based on interviews with more than 1,000 of today’s top retailers, conducted by the magazine’s research team. According to officials at the rapidly-growing Charlottesville, Virginia-based company, RKG has continued to add to its impressive client roster even since the survey was completed, and now counts an industry-leading roster of over 40 of the Top 500 retailers among its clients.

This latest positive news for RKG makes it the number one Search Engine Marketing vendor to serve top retail clients using proprietary bid management technology. This is a distinction that captures the essence of what the company is all about, according to its Co-Founder and CEO George Michie.

“RKG’s success can be traced directly to our client-centric approach and our deep retail experience,” Michie said. “One key way to that approach is that we serve our clients with proprietary, customizable technology. It is simply impossible to deliver flexible, customized solutions with rigid, third-party software.”

The source of the recognition, according to RKG VP of Marketing Ryan Gibson, makes it even more gratifying. “As an agency with its roots in retail and in search, it means even more to us to be recognized by a group made up of today’s leading retailers. Their recognition is further proof that our unique combination of smart marketers and leading technologies provides exactly what retailers want and need in a dynamic and challenging marketplace. We congratulate our partners on the IR 500 and look forward to sharing RKG’s capabilities with even more members of this elite group in the future.”

Current RKG clients on the 2012 IR500 list include Charming Shoppes, Eddie Bauer, Nutrisystem, ThinkGeek and Zale Corp, along with over 35 others.

DuPont Leader: Innovation will Drive Food Security Solutions

To contact us Click HERE
Meeting Global Food Security Challenge will Require Productivity Improvements Driven by Multiple Technologies and Approaches

ROTORUA, New Zealand (PRWEB) September 04, 2012

John Bedbrook, vice president, DuPont Agricultural Biotechnology, challenged attendees of the 2012 Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference (ABIC) to look for multiple solutions in the fight for global food security. Bedbrook delivered the keynote address to launch the annual conference being held in Rotorua, New Zealand, this year.

“Innovative science and technology are at the core of productivity improvements that will allow us to meet food security goals,” said Bedbrook. “We must leverage all the science and technology tools available, including mechanization, plant breeding, biotechnology and new ideas that are being developed by scientists around the world.”

“The world’s farmers face the daunting challenge of feeding a world population that is expected to grow from 7 billion today to more than 10 billion by the turn of the century,” said Bedbrook. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), by 2050 approximately 70 percent of the world’s population will live in cities and large towns.

Increasing productivity on available acres will require improvements in plant breeding, as well as other technologies and management practices that fit local growing conditions and community needs.

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution. We must work together to find the right tools to meet local needs,” said Bedbrook. “We must also ensure that science-based policies are in place worldwide to enable innovation.”

Farmers will need to leverage all of the tools to provide sustainable solutions. Biotechnology is one important tool that will help drive productivity to meet the world’s food security needs. In 2011, 16.7 million farmers worldwide planted 160 million hectares of biotech crops, an 8 percent increase (12 million hectares) from 2010. About 90 percent of farmers planting biotech crops were small landholders in 19 developing countries.

“New Zealand has a historical track record of agricultural productivity excellence,” said Bedbrook, a native New Zealander who has spent his career driving innovation in agricultural research. “I hope that this international conference will inspire local young people to enter the field of agricultural research and bring new innovation to agricultural productivity.”

DuPont is committed to improving food security across the globe. In 2011, the company invested 62 percent of research and development budget on improving feed quality.

Founded in 2003, RKG is a data-driven digital marketing agency specializing in paid search marketing, search engine optimization, social media, comparison shopping engines and display advertising, brought together by multichannel attribution management.

Long recognized as the thought leader in online marketing, RKG has nearly 200 clients in the retail, travel, media, education, finance and online services. Learn more at http://www.rimmkaufman.com. You can also follow RKG on Twitter @rimmkaufman.

New Poll Shows Online Business Reviews Are Read by 93% of American Consumers

To contact us Click HERE
Local Business Review Site 5StarControl takes on the topic of a new consumer poll that shows 93% of Americans read online reviews before using a local business.

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) September 10, 2012

5StarControl disclosed secrets on a new poll which shows that more than 9 out of every 10 American consumers check and read online reviews before using a local business.

Local Business Review Site 5StarControl said local businesses are entranced with the new Street Fight Poll, in which 93% of respondents said that they always or sometimes read online reviews of a business on sites like Yelp or Angie’s List before patronizing local establishments.

Founded in 2011, Street Fight provides news, analysis, and commentary on what it terms the “hyperlocal” industry. Through its website, streetfightmag.com, Street Fight looks at the trends pertaining to the crossroads where sites such as review site Yelp, coupon provider Groupon, and check-in services like Foursquare meet. The site not only publishes news, but also conducts its own research, polling and analysis of the market, as well as featuring noted industry experts in interviews and guest columns.

Angie’s List began as Columbus Neighbors in Columbus, Ohio in 1995. At the time it was a small database of local business reviews collected door-to-door. Today, Angie’s List has more than 1.5 million subscribers to its huge collection of local business reviews. Differing from other online review sites, Angie’s List users pay a subscription fee to use the service. Angie’s List employees read every single review, and attempt to maintain review integrity by filtering out fake or biased reviews. Angie’s List went public with an IPO in November, 2011, but has seen its stock battered by investors, trading at little over half the initial stock price.

Yelp has fared much better in its venture into the stock market, cementing its place as one of the top companies in the online review industry. Since its beginnings in 2004 Yelp has grown to serve more than 70 million monthly users, who use the website and associated mobile app to read and write reviews of local businesses. Yelp is quickly becoming one of the most relied on sites for business reviews, with a recent study showing bad Yelp reviews can quantifiably hurt a restaurant’s business.

The results of the Street Fight poll illustrate the growing trend of American consumers turning to online reviews of local businesses to give them insights into where to eat and shop. Local small business owners must be more and more aware of the conversations about them on Yelp, Angie’s List and other services, and act and react accordingly; otherwise, with so many potential customers reading internet reviews, they risk losing both new and existing customers.

5StarControl is a forum covering local business issues in the area of Yelp reputation.

AAPI Approves AUA as the Leader in International Medical Education

To contact us Click HERE
The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) has approved American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine as the leader in international medical education.

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 12, 2012

The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) has approved American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine as the leader in international medical education.

AAPI made this declaration after reviewing New York State Education Department and Medical Board of California site reports and after the university was reviewed by AAPI medical educators. They determined that, based on the strength of AUA’s curriculum, resources, and faculty as well as the success of its graduates, it is the first and only international medical school worthy of this exclusive approval.

“Out of the international medical schools I have reviewed, AUA’s program is undoubtedly the finest,” said AAPI President Dr. Narendra R. Kumar. “I am proud to bestow our highest honor upon this institution.”

AAPI has partnered with AUA to establish the AAPI and AUA College of Medicine Scholarship for Students of Indian Descent, based on the understanding of AUA’s history of excellence and a firm belief in the institution’s future. The scholarship has and will continue to provide a medical education for students of Indian descent who aspire to be physicians. About 42 percent of AUA’s students are Indian-Americans or of Indian descent.

AUA was founded in 2004 to address the coming physician shortage and to break down barriers that have prevented underrepresented minorities from obtaining a medical education and subsequent medical licensure. AUA is approved by the New York State Department of Education, is recognized by the Medical Board of California, and has provisional accreditation from the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions.

“I want to thank AUA’s students, graduates, faculty, and administration for making this possible,” said AUA President and Co-Founder Neal Simon. “It was their drive and passion that has made AUA’s program synonymous with excellence.”

AUA has a unique relationship with Manipal University. AUA’s 2+2+2 program allows high school graduates to begin their medical education at Manipal. Upon successful completion of the premedical program, students transfer to AUA’s campus in Antigua to complete their Basic Sciences in two years. Students finish their degree with an intensive two-year Clinical Sciences program, which takes place at teaching hospitals in the U.S., Canada, and India.

“A global society deserves globally educated physicians,” said Simon. “AUA gives our students the opportunity to study abroad in India so they can be prepared to engage with patients from a variety of ethnic, national, and cultural backgrounds.”

AAPI is a forum to facilitate and enable Indian-American physicians to excel in patient care, teaching, and research and to pursue their aspirations in professional and community affairs. AAPI promotes professional solidarity and the bringing of distinctive contributions from India to the American health care system.

“AAPI has united Indian-American physicians with a common goal – to foster a better health care system around the world,” said Simon. “We are honored to have this coveted distinction associated with our university.”

"I've been a huge fan of the America's Cup since the 1980s and I've been hoping for this day for a long time, to have the races come home to San Francisco, right here in our own beautiful backyard," said Jay Gardner, president of Adventure Cat Sailing Charters and sailing enthusiast. Gardner, along with his wife, business partner and crew, built the company's first catamaran by hand in 1991, a 48-passenger, coast guard certified vessel which is still in operation today. "The natural terrain of the bay creates the perfect amphitheater-like stage for water-viewing, not to mention the sheer beauty of the area. All of these elements, coupled with the region's strong winds and ocean currents should make for a thrilling series of events, possibly even the best Cup yet. If it's really nuking out on the Bay, it could end up being a game of pure survival - the winner simply being the last boat standing."

For more information or to purchase tickets aboard Adventure Cat, please call 1-800-498-4228 or visit http://www.adventurecat.com . Mention this press release and receive 25% off weekday sails (Tue, Wed, Thu).

Music video: 'Ooo I wanna get you out of Teterboro...'

by B. N. Sullivan

A pilot in my family turned me on to this terrific music video -- written, performed and produced by his friend,  Mike Wagner.  The catchy lyrics are set to an old Beach Boys song, and the video is very entertaining.
Out in New Jersey(s)
There’s a place called Teterboro
That’s where everybody goes
To be a part of it all

Lots of jets on the ramp
Loaded up waiting to start engines
They’ll be there for an hour
Before they even have the chance
Down in Teterboro
You can find the rest of the Teterboro lyrics on Mike's blog, and you can find a link to download an audio-only version there, too.

If the video does not play or display properly above, click here to view it on YouTube.

Kudos to Mike Wagner for doing such a great job with the video, and thanks to Pat Sullivan for sending it to me.
